Seismic hazard map created by Amateur Seismic Centre (ASC) using the Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Programme (GSHAP) dataset. Description Seismic hazard is typically determined using a combination of seismological, morphological, geological and geotechnical investigations, combined with the history of earthquakes in the region. The seismic hazard map of Bangladesh was developed by ASC using the GSHAP dataset, considering all the historical earthquake data of earthquake in relation to the tectonic plate boundaries and faults all around and under Bangladesh. GSHAP was launched in 1992 by the International Lithosphere Program (ILP) with the support of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), and endorsed as a demonstration program in the framework of the United Nations International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (UN/IDNDR). The primary goal of GSHAP was to create a global seismic hazard map in a harmonized and regionally coordinated fashion, based on advanced methods in probabilistic seismic hazard assessments. According to GSHAP data, Bangladesh lies in a region with low to high seismic hazard that increases in the northern and eastern parts of the country. Historically, earthquakes in the M6.0-7.0 range have been experienced in Chittagong, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions while events in the M5.0-6.0 range have been experienced in Khulna and Rajshahi divisions. The seismic hazard map of Bangladesh depicts Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), given in units of m/s2, with a 10% chance of exceedance in 50 years. Source The seismic hazard map has been reproduced on the geographic area coverage of Bangladesh from a published graphic file by ASC. The original project was conducted by GSHAP from 1992 to 1999.
